Horse Blanketing 101

Keeping Your Horse Warm, Dry, and Comfortable This Winter

As the temperatures drop and the winds pick up, it’s time to start thinking about how to keep your horse cozy through the winter months. Whether your horse lives outside full-time or spends nights in the barn, the right blanket can make a big difference in their comfort, health, and coat condition.

Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right blanket for your horse — and how to know when it’s time to put one on.

Why Use a Horse Blanket?

Horses naturally grow a thick winter coat, but blanketing provides extra protection from rain, wind, and snow. It also helps:

  • Keep clipped horses warm after body clipping for shows or training.

  • Protect older or thinner horses that struggle to maintain body heat.

  • Prevent chills for horses living in wet or windy climates.

  • Keep coats clean and smooth for show season.

Types of Blankets

Every horse and environment is different, so understanding blanket types helps you make the best choice.

1. Turnout Blankets – Waterproof and breathable, made for outdoor use. Available in different weights:

  • Lightweight (0g) for mild or wet weather

  • Medium (200–250g) for cool winter days

  • Heavy (300g+) for freezing conditions

2. Stable Blankets – Designed for indoor warmth; not waterproof but soft and cozy for stalls.

3. Coolers & Sheets – Lightweight, breathable layers to help your horse dry after exercise or stay clean before shows.

When to Blanket

Not every horse needs a blanket every day!
Consider these factors:

  • Weather: Wind and rain lower a horse’s natural insulation.

  • Coat Type: Clipped horses need more protection.

  • Age & Condition: Seniors and underweight horses get cold faster.

  • Living Conditions: Horses turned out with shelter may need less coverage than stalled horses.

When in doubt, check under the blanket — if your horse is sweating, it’s too warm!

Finding the Perfect Fit

A good fit is key to comfort. The blanket should sit smoothly over the shoulders and withers, covering the horse’s rump without slipping or rubbing. If you’re unsure about sizing, our staff at Golden Horseshoe Equestrian can help you measure and match your horse with the perfect fit.

Care and Longevity

Take care of your investment:

  • Brush off mud and hair regularly

  • Let blankets dry completely before storage

  • Re-waterproof as needed

  • Wash with horse blanket-safe detergent

With a little maintenance, a good-quality blanket can last several seasons.
