Blanket Weights

Blanket Weights

What Does “Blanket Weight” Mean?

Blanket weight refers to the amount of fill (insulation) inside the blanket, measured in grams (g).
The higher the number, the warmer the blanket.

Think of it like the difference between a light rain jacket and a puffy winter coat — both useful, but for different temperatures.

0g — The Turnout Sheet

Best for: Mild weather, rain, and wind protection.

A turnout sheet (also called a 0g blanket) has no insulation. It’s designed to keep your horse dry and shielded from wind, without adding warmth.

Perfect for:

  • Fall and spring days when it’s wet but not cold
  • Horses that run warm or are unclipped
  • Keeping horses clean before shows

Tip: A 0g sheet is your go-to for rain protection without overheating your horse.

100g–150g — The Lightweight Blanket

Best for: Cool nights or mild winters.

This in-between option adds just enough warmth for crisp weather. Lightweight blankets are great for:

  • Clipped horses on 45–55°F days
  • Horses living outdoors in moderate climates
  • Transitioning between seasons

They’re also ideal for layering — start with a lightweight, then add a liner when temps drop.

200g–250g — The Medium Weight Blanket

Best for: Average winter conditions.

Medium weights are the most versatile and popular choice. They provide solid warmth without being too bulky.

Perfect for:

  • Daytime turnout in cold but not freezing weather
  • Clipped or thin-coated horses
  • Horses that live outdoors with access to shelter

300g–400g — The Heavyweight Blanket

Best for: Cold climates and freezing temperatures.

When it’s truly cold out, a heavyweight blanket provides maximum warmth and protection.
They’re made for:

  • Harsh winters
  • Horses that are clipped, older, or struggle to maintain weight
  • Pasture turnout in snow, ice, or below-freezing temps

If your horse spends a lot of time outside in frigid weather, this is their best defense against the chill.

Layering for Flexibility

If you live in an area where temperatures swing wildly, layering is a smart way to stay adaptable.
Start with a lightweight or medium turnout and add a liner blanket (like those in the WeatherBeeta Liner System) as temperatures drop.

This approach gives you more control — and fewer bulky blankets to store!
