Stable Sheets vs. Turnout Sheets/Blankets

Stable Sheets vs. Turnout Blankets: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to keeping your horse warm, clean, and comfortable, the blanket aisle can get confusing fast. “Stable sheet,” “turnout blanket,” “lite,” “medium,” “heavyweight” — what do they all mean?

Let’s break down two of the most common types of horse blankets — stable sheets and turnout blankets — and when to use each one.

Stable Sheets: Indoor Comfort

A stable sheet (or stable blanket) is designed for horses that spend most of their time indoors, like in a stall or covered barn.

These blankets are not waterproof, because they’re not meant to be worn out in the rain or snow. Instead, their main purpose is to keep your horse clean, warm, and comfortable while inside.

Key Features:

  • Soft, breathable materials like cotton or nylon lining for comfort.

  • No waterproof layer — not safe for turnout in wet conditions.

  • Often lighter weight than turnout blankets, but sometimes available in insulated versions for chilly barns.

  • Help keep your horse’s coat smooth and free from bedding dust or shavings.

Best For:

  • Horses stalled overnight or full-time.

  • Horses that stay clean before shows or events.

  • Mild climates or well-insulated barns.

Turnout Sheets & Blankets: Outdoor Protection

A turnout blanket (or turnout sheet) is made for the great outdoors — the pasture, paddock, or open field.

These blankets are waterproof, durable, and breathable, designed to withstand the elements while allowing natural movement and comfort.

Key Features:

  • Waterproof outer shell (usually 600D–1200D ripstop polyester).

  • Breathable lining to prevent sweating.

  • Freedom gussets and tail flaps for movement and protection.

  • Available in different weights:

    • Turnout Sheet (0g) — no insulation, just waterproof coverage.

    • Lightweight (100g) — mild cold or rain.

    • Medium Weight (200–250g) — average winter weather.

    • Heavy Weight (300g+) — cold, harsh climates.

🐎 Best For:

  • Horses living outside or turned out daily.

  • Wet or windy conditions.

  • Clipped, older, or thinner horses that need extra warmth.

🧣 Which One Does Your Horse Need?

If your horse spends time both indoors and outdoors, you might need one of each:

  • A stable sheet for overnight comfort.

  • A turnout blanket for pasture protection.

Together, they keep your horse warm, dry, and looking show-ring ready all winter long.
