Coolers vs. Blankets: What’s the Difference and When to Use Each
When the weather cools down, every horse owner reaches for their favorite layers — but knowing which one to use can make all the difference in your horse’s comfort.
Two of the most common options are coolers and blankets. While they might look similar, they serve very different purposes. Let’s break down what each one does and when to use it!
Coolers: Drying and Cooling Comfortably
Coolers are designed to help your horse dry off safely after exercise, turnout, or a bath. They’re made from moisture-wicking materials like fleece or technical mesh that pull sweat or moisture away from the coat while allowing heat to escape.
Think of a cooler as your horse’s “after workout hoodie.” It keeps them from catching a chill while they dry, helping prevent muscle stiffness or shivering in cooler weather.
When to use a cooler:
- After a ride when your horse is sweaty or damp
- After bathing on a cool day
- During trailering in cooler temperatures
- As a lightweight layer before or after showing
Coolers aren’t waterproof, and they don’t provide insulation — so once your horse is dry and cooled off, it’s time to switch to a blanket if they need extra warmth.
Blankets: Warmth and Weather Protection
Blankets are made to keep your horse warm, dry, and protected from the elements. They come in a range of weights and styles to suit the season and your horse’s individual needs.
Unlike coolers, blankets offer insulation and (in the case of turnout blankets) waterproofing. You’ll find:
- Stable Blankets: For warmth indoors — soft, cozy, and not waterproof.
- Turnout Blankets/Sheets: For outdoor protection — durable, waterproof, and breathable.
- Varying Weights: From 0g turnout sheets for rain protection to heavyweight 360g blankets for frigid conditions.
When to use a blanket:
- When temperatures drop below your horse’s comfort range
- During cold, windy, or wet weather
- For clipped, senior, or thin horses needing extra warmth
- Overnight or for extended turnout in cold climates
Cooler or Blanket — Which One Do You Need?
In many cases, horses benefit from having both.
A cooler helps your horse safely transition from work to rest by wicking away sweat, while a blanket keeps them cozy once they’re dry and ready to relax.
Here’s a quick way to remember it:
✨ Cooler = Drying tool.
🧥 Blanket = Warmth and protection.
Using each at the right time keeps your horse comfortable, helps maintain muscle health, and supports a healthy winter coat.
