Equine Nutrition Part 2: Grain & Supplements
Friday, February 13 | 6:00–8:00 PM
National Equestrian Center (NEC)
This in-person educational panel, Equine Nutrition Part 2: Grain & Supplements continues the forage-first conversation introduced in part 1 of our nutrition series, Hay Matters, advancing equine nutrition into its next stages: grain and supplementation. Check our part 1, Hay Matters: Understanding Horse's Forage, at Horse Hub TV.
Once forage quality has been evaluated, decisions around concentrates and supplements become the most misunderstood—and often misapplied—components of feeding. This discussion is designed to help horse owners understand how grain and supplements fit into a complete nutrition framework, rather than approaching them as isolated or automatic additions.
Moderated by Robin Haynes, Owner-Partner of Golden Horseshoe Equestrian, the panel will explore nutrition through a systems-based lens, emphasizing clarity, balance, and long-term horse welfare. The conversation will focus on principles and evaluation, not individual feeding prescriptions.
Audience questions will be incorporated throughout the discussion to deepen understanding while keeping the focus on broadly applicable concepts.
Discussion themes include:
- How forage evaluation informs all downstream feeding decisions
- When grain is appropriate—and when it creates imbalance
- Understanding calories versus nutrients and why the distinction matters
- The role of supplements within a complete feeding program
- Common nutrition myths and how they persist
- Interpreting labels and claims with greater confidence
This event is intended for horse owners and riders across disciplines who want a clearer, more intentional approach to equine nutrition.
