Rug Safe Wash-In Reproofer – Restore Waterproofing the Smart Way

Give your horse’s hard-working turnout a second life. Rug Safe Wash-In Reproofer refreshes the waterproof finish on modern horse rugs while keeping them breathable, comfortable, and barn-ready for the next storm.

Key Benefits

  • Re-waterproofs turnout rugs – Renews the durable water repellency on all modern turnout blankets after washing.

  • Stays breathable – Uses modern proofing technology without waxes or silicones, helping maintain the rug’s ability to breathe so your horse doesn’t overheat.

  • Low-temperature performance – Works effectively at cool/30°C washes, protecting delicate waterproof membranes and saving energy.

  • Helps fight barn odors – Rug Safe’s rug-care range is formulated to clean and help destroy odor-causing bacteria, leaving rugs fresher for longer.

  • Easy wash-in application – Let your washing machine do the work: no wrestling with spray bottles or trying to hit every seam by hand.

  • Protects your investment – Extends the usable life of your blankets by keeping them waterproof and functional, season after season.

What It Is

Rug Safe Wash-In Reproofer is a high-performance, wash-in waterproofing treatment designed specifically for modern turnout horse rugs. It’s used after washing to restore water repellency while preserving breathability and fabric flexibility.

The formula is:

  • Suitable for all modern turnout rugs

  • Free from waxes and silicones, relying instead on advanced proofing agents used in modern rug manufacturing for better long-term performance and airflow

  • Designed to work at cool water temperatures so you don’t cook the waterproof membrane

Size: 1 L bottle – typically enough for 2–3 rugs depending on size and how heavily you dose.

Perfect For

  • Horse owners with older turnouts that wet out on the back or shoulders

  • Barn managers looking to extend the life of a blanket inventory

  • Riders who want low-effort, machine-applied waterproofing

  • Anyone pairing it with Rug Safe Blanket Wash as a complete clean + reproof system

How to Use (Machine Wash Method

Always follow the care label on your rug and check your washing machine can safely handle the rug’s weight.

Step 1 – Start with a clean rug

  1. Brush off heavy mud and hair.

  2. Wash the rug first using a rug-safe, non-detergent blanket wash (such as Rug Safe Blanket Wash). Avoid regular laundry detergents and fabric softeners – they damage waterproof membranes and reduce repellency.

  3. Rinse thoroughly.

Step 2 – Apply the Reproofer

  1. Leave the clean rug in the machine.

  2. Select a rinse + spin cycle (cool / 30°C / “cold” setting).

  3. Pour 300–500 ml of Rug Safe Wash-In Reproofer into the detergent drawer (or as directed on your bottle). Use the lower end for lighter/medium rugs, the higher end for heavy or very tired rugs.

  4. Run the cycle and let the machine distribute the product evenly through the rug.

Step 3 – Dry & Reactivate

  1. Do not tumble dry. Remove the rug and hang it to air dry naturally over a bar, gate, or rug rack. Avoid high heat or direct, intense sun, which can damage the waterproof membrane.

  2. Once fully dry, test by sprinkling a little water on the outer fabric. Beading and rolling off = you’re back in business.

Pro Tips from Golden Horseshoe

  • Clean + proof as a pair: You’ll get the best result by using a specialist rug wash first, then reproofing. Dirt and old detergent residues block waterproofing and breathability.

  • Don’t overstuff the washer: If the rug barely fits, the product can’t circulate properly. Either use a commercial machine or treat very bulky rugs in two passes.

  • Watch the “dark patch” test: If your horse’s rug looks soaked on the outside but the lining and horse stay dry, you’re fine. If the dark wet patches show on the inside or the rug feels clammy, it’s time to reproof.

  • Store smart: Clean and reproof before you pack rugs away for summer. You’ll pull out ready-to-go waterproofs next season instead of musty, sad pancakes.
