Introducing the GHE Learning Center Annual Horsemanship Forum

This spring, the GHE Learning Center is proud to introduce the 1st Annual GHE Learning Center Annual Horsemanship Forum, a new flagship education event dedicated to thoughtful, horse-centered learning.

Created to elevate understanding across disciplines, the Annual Horsemanship Forum brings together experienced educators, real horses, and engaged riders for programming that emphasizes communication, anatomy, movement, and informed decision-making. The inaugural Forum will take place at the National Equestrian Center in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, and will feature a two-day clinic focused on bit and bridle fitting as a foundational element of the horse-rider conversation.

The 2026 Forum Focus: Bit & Bridle Fitting

The focus of the 2026 Annual Horsemanship Forum is a two-day educational clinic designed to help riders better understand one of the most influential—and often misunderstood—elements in horsemanship: the bit and bridle.

Titled Bit and Bridle Fitting: Understanding the Conversation Between Horse and Rider, this clinic combines structured instruction with live fitting demonstrations to explore how anatomy, movement, and communication shape a horse’s response to equipment.

Guiding this inaugural program is Stephanie Brown-Beamer, a LANTRA-certified and fully qualified bit and bridle fitter, trained through an internationally recognized, research-based certification program. Stephanie’s work is widely respected for its clarity, depth, and emphasis on understanding the horse’s experience rather than prescribing quick solutions.

Learning From an Expert Guide

Stephanie Brown-Beamer brings years of hands-on fitting experience working with horses and riders across disciplines and levels. Her approach is grounded in careful observation, biomechanics, and empathy for the horse, with a strong emphasis on rider education.

Throughout the clinic, Stephanie will conduct 14 individual bit and bridle fittings, narrating her thought process so participants can follow not only what decisions are made, but why. Rather than focusing on trends or one-size-fits-all answers, she helps riders understand how each horse’s anatomy, movement, and balance influence comfort and responsiveness.

For auditors, this provides a rare opportunity to observe a professional fitting process in real time. For fitting clients, it offers a one-on-one educational experience that prioritizes understanding over prescription.

Why Bit & Bridle Education Matters

Bits are not tools of control; they are tools of communication. When that communication is unclear, inconsistent, or uncomfortable, horses respond in predictable ways—resistance, tension, loss of balance, or disengagement. Riders often attempt to address these issues through equipment changes without fully understanding the underlying cause.

Education changes that dynamic.

When riders understand how a bit interacts with the horse’s mouth, how movement affects contact, and how rider habits influence responsiveness, they are better equipped to make thoughtful decisions. They gain the ability to evaluate whether a bit change is appropriate, recognize when a training or balance issue is at play, and advocate more confidently for their horse’s comfort and long-term welfare.

This clinic was designed to support that level of understanding.

A Program Built Around Seeing and Understanding

Rather than separating theory from practice, the clinic intentionally combines the two.

Across both days, participants will observe live fitting demonstrations with real horses, representing a variety of disciplines and needs. These are not scripted examples. They are authentic assessments, where different options may be explored to observe how each horse responds—physically, behaviorally, and in motion.

In addition to the fittings, the program includes a 90-minute educational lecture that provides the conceptual framework behind the decisions being made. Topics include:

  • Oral anatomy and conformation
  • How movement and balance affect contact
  • The role of timing and release in communication
  • Common misconceptions around “stronger” or “milder” equipment

By pairing explanation with application, riders are able to connect principles to practice in a way that is both accessible and meaningful.

Designed for a Wide Range of Riders

This clinic is intentionally accessible and cross-disciplinary.

It is well suited for:

  • Riders who feel uncertain about whether their current bit choice truly supports their horse
  • Owners who want a clearer understanding of comfort, responsiveness, and communication
  • Western and English riders seeking principles that apply beyond discipline-specific rules
  • Auditors who want to learn through observation and discussion without bringing a horse

No advanced technical background is required. The focus is on helping riders think more clearly and confidently about the choices they make.

Education With a Broader Purpose

As part of Saturday’s program, the GHE Learning Center will recognize its 2026 scholarship recipients, reinforcing the Learning Center’s commitment to accessible, meaningful education.

The Annual Horsemanship Forum was created around a simple belief:

When people learn better, horses live better.

By hosting programming like this clinic, the GHE Learning Center aims to elevate horsemanship standards, foster thoughtful decision-making, and support a culture of learning that benefits horses first.
